South Bank's Top Summer Terraces

April 27th, 2021 | by Tom Harrow-Smith

Top Summer Terraces

Never before has the outdoor terrace been so important. Even with lockdown restrictions easing on 17 May for the return of indoor dining, we all know that when the suns out, we want to be out too, whether that’s simply to have a glass of wine or beer with friends, or to enjoy some of the best food London has to offer.

This bank holiday weekend, we all know that many of us will be looking for the best spots to soak up some Spring sunshine, if it decides to grace us with its presence that is. And there's not many better places to spend a sunny London day than South Bank, so if you need a helping hand deciding where to head, this guide will give you the lowdown.

  • Sea Containers

Sea Containers terrace is currently open to bookings and walk-ins every week from Wednesday evening to Sunday. Designed by visionary Tom Dixon, Sea Containers Restaurant is an all-day dining experience along the River Thames. With a menu designed to be shared, the food offering celebrates seasonality and ingredient-led cooking, making it suitable for any occasion. Expect a relaxed and inclusive atmosphere and engaging staff.

Situated on the river bank with a view across to St Pauls, Blackfriars Bridge and beyond. To view their menu's or make a reservation, click here.

  • Skylon

Skylon has opened its summer terrace for the second year running, located on the second outdoor level of the Royal Festival Hall. In previous years, this terrace has been the place to catch brilliant views across the river and now you can sit out under the sun with a seafood platter, cocktails or a glass of bubbly and watch the world go by. Now doesn't that sound like heaven?

Skylon are always open to walk in's if there are tables free, but if you would rather reserve a space, you can do so here.

  • Limin' Beach Club

Limin' Beach Club in Gabriel's Wharf is quickly gaining a reputation as one of the best dining experiences in London, gaining rave recent reviews in the Evening Standard, Glamour Magazine, Secret London and much more. With an outdoor urban beach, a menu inspired by owner Sham Mahabir's love of the food of his native Trinidad and Tobago and plenty of rum cocktails on offer, you'll be hard pushed not to feel the summer vibes. Over half the menu is vegan too, as much of the food from these Caribbean islands are naturally so. Whilst you can book ahead, there are always tables set aside for walk-ins, which is welcome news to those of you who have had experiences of trying to book a table these past few weeks.

  • OXO Tower Restaurant

Magical sunset views at an award winning restaurant, oh and a rooftop terrace to boost, these are just some of the reasons why a trip to OXO Tower Restaurant's terrace is a must for those looking to push the boat out. The OXO team have even built a temporary covering for the terrace just in case the weather decides not to play ball. But even on an overcast day, the views from the top of Oxo Tower will still make a meal there more than memorable.

  • BFI Riverfront

We can't always be expected to plan everything in advance. If you're after a spontaneous catch up with friends over a drink or a great bite to eat, then BFI Riverfront is only open for walk-ins. Situated underneath Waterloo Bridge, but with some sunny spots too, watch people peruse the famous South Bank Book Market opposite for a Parisian vibe. There's also a secret balcony bar, giving panoramic views up and down the river from the top of Waterloo Bridge's arch.  And if you want to know something really special, they serve pizza until 10.30pm, making it the perfect place to finish a nigh out in South Bank!

  • The Green Room

A bit of a hidden gem due to its location behind the National Theatre, the word is now out about The Green Room, which after coming under new management last summer, has quickly become a huge hit thanks to its wide, open green garden and terrific menu. It's fair to say that the most popular items are the pizzas made in their own wood fired oven, but there's plenty more to feast on - you can view the menu here.

The Green Room's stunning outside dining area is open all day and can hold up to 140 socially distanced diners, come rain or shine with coverings and outdoor heaters. What's more, the garden is surrounded by aromatic homegrown herbs, used in both the food and drinks menu.

Whilst advised to book ahead, walk-ins can be seated if space is available.

  • Marsha

South Bank's newest independent restaurant is Marsha, whose menu is all about celebrating, and making the most out of the glorious chicken. The core of their philosophy is sustainability and they make sure they don't waste a single part of the bird. This eco friendly ethos can also be seen in the full range of vegan and veggie options on offer too, even if you are a meat eater, you'd be advised to try some of the delicious treats too.

With great views over the River Thames from Marsha's riverfront balcony, or the terrace which opens out onto the heart of Gabriel's Wharf, the outdoor dining is up there with the best South Bank has to offer. And did we mention that takeaway is available too? Which means you can even sit and enjoy a meal on the beach below (at low tide of course!).

  • Brasserie Blanc

Brasserie Blanc's outdoor terrace has had a brand new makeover! Swing by before or after your theatre bookings for a brand new summer menu along with some fabulous new wines, with a weekday Happy Hour offering 2-4-1 on selected cocktails. What could be better in the sunshine?
