South Bank Summer Holidays

July 20th, 2021 | by Tom Harrow-Smith

South Bank Summer Holidays

With the summer holidays finally upon us, we've rounded up some of the top things to do in South Bank to keep the kids happy over the next six weeks. South Bank has it all, from landmark tourist attractions, to cultural venues that cater to young and old alike with a mixture of live performances, museums and galleries. It's also never been a better time to head to London for a family day out, with less crowds due to the low numbers of foreign tourists this year. Take a read below to help you plan your ultimate South Bank summer day out!

  • LATITUDE, WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHS FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE

From 23 July to 15 August, gallery@oxo will host an exhibition from renowned wildlife photographer Roger Hooper. Featuring a range of animal photographs from across all seven continents, this is not only a fantastic opportunity to see some great pictures, but also to learn about the environment and what can be done to save it, which is at the core of Hooper's message in his works.

  • Florence Nightingale Museum

The Florence Nightingale museum has had to shut since the start of the pandemic, but fortunately they are still open one weekend a month. So if you want to learn about the incredible story of Florence, the 'Lady of the Lamp', then make sure you book tickets on the weekend of 7 - 8 August.

You can see the lamp Florence carried during the Crimean War, her medicine chest, her best-seller ‘Notes on Nursing’ and also her pet owl, Athena! Florence's legacy has never been more important, so this makes a fantastic fun and educational day out!

  • SEA LIFE London

Who wants to go to the seaside this summer? Well at SEA LIFE London you can go one step better and dive below the waves themselves to see all sorts of marvellous underwater creatures, from penguins to sharks and almost everything in between. Tickets are selling fast, and advanced booking is required due to the aquarium's limited capacity, so make sure you SNAP up those spaces while you can. You can even get 2 for 1 on Merlin attractions this summer, which includes Shrek's Adventure, London Dungeon and the London Eye - all of which are in South Bank!

  • Family Fun at IWM London

IWM London has two great family events this summer; Story Seekers and Spies & Disguise.

In Story Seekers, your family can discover real artefacts and find moving and surprising stories from people who braved shark-infested waters to ingenious nurses and those who built machines of conflict. And in Spies & Disguise Spy recruits will be put through their paces, including a crash course in camouflage, learning top tips for coding, meeting the best secret agents for coded missions and more.

Spies & Dusguise runs 7-8 August, whilst Story Seekers is a available to attend across the summer holidays.

  • Board Game Bonanza at Draughts

With it being a British summer, we can't always guarantee that South Bank will be bathed in permanent sunshine from July through to the end of August. That's why it's a good idea to have a rainy day idea up your sleeve, and where better to look than the ultimate board game cafe? Draughts Waterloo not only boasts over 800 games, from the classic to the obscure, it's also located in the iconic Leake Street graffiti tunnels. So why not combine a trip to the two?

  • Southbank Centre's Family Events

The Southbank Centre are one of the best cultural venues for curating events suitable for all ages and it's no different this summer with several events. Highlights include Shingai's After Glow, a free afternoon of family, circus themed fun; or there's The Element Session from Zoonation, a day of dance battles and performances revealing the social roots of hip-hop culture.

What's more, all their events will be taking place outside on Level 2 of Southbank Centre's Riverside Terrace, providing a fantastic way to enjoy the summer sunshine with that iconic South Bank backdrop.

  • The London Eye

Of course everyone knows about the London Eye, but it may be somewhere you might normally give a miss during the summer holidays to stay away from the tourist crowds. But as we all know, this summer is a lot different, with foreign travel to London a small fraction of what it normally is during the summer months. This means there's no better time to ride the London Eye, with reduced ticket prices and discounts if you book in advance.
