Top Winter Events

October 12th, 2018 | by Jennifer Edwards

Top Winter Events in South Bank

Step into South Bank and let the twinkling, fairy-light magic sweep you up and fill you with festive spirit. Enjoy delicious treats at Southbank Centre winter market, see world-class performances at the National Theatre or Old Vic, wander around the latest Hayward Gallery exhibition or simply stroll along the riverside walkway with a hot chocolate or mulled wine in hand…

And remember, South Bank is an easy walk from Covent Garden, Westminster and many more of London’s top attractions, as well as being connected via Waterloo Station and the Jubilee, Northern, Bakerloo and Waterloo & City lines. Perfect for exploring all the city has to offer.

  • A Magical Christmas at Gabriel’s Wharf

Back by popular demand, Gabriel’s Wharf Magical Christmas returns this year! Located at the bustling shopping enclave by OXO Tower, Gabriel’s Wharf is transformed into a twinkly festive paradise, complete with glittering central Christmas Tree. Organised by social enterprise Coin Street Community Builders, it’s the perfect place to relax with a coffee or a nice meal, whilst the kids will enjoy the activities on offer. You can also browse the Dazzle Jewellery Exhibition for unique, handcrafted bags, scarves and jewellery which make great gifts for others as well as yourself!

  • Festive Films at House of Vans

The festive season is notorious for being a serious drain on the purse, so it is indeed very happy news to know that House of Vans’ free cinema will be open and screening a host of crowd-pleasing films over the festive period. Your eyes do not deceive you – this is not a drill! It’s a completely free cinema, showing current and classic films, make sure you check the programme. It’s also one of London’s most quirky and original cinemas – you’ll hear the occasional rumble of trains overhead as it is directly underneath Waterloo Station, the UK’s busiest station. House of Vans also has a great little American-style diner, serving amazing burgers and fries (not free, alas), called The Wall SE1. Make a night of it!

Enjoy a festive experience with family and friends in one of the beautiful private dining rooms or treat yourself to a Christmas Day Carvery at Gillray’s Steakhouse & Bar. We’d also recommend an afternoon tea in the Library by the crackling fire, or a gin cocktail at the bar, one of the best in London and with over 100 varieties on offer.

  • Bustling Winter Markets and Spectacular Shows

Southbank Centre pulls out all the stops when it comes to the festive season. Their legendary winter market is jam-packed with festive treats, including cinnamon swirls, German sausage and mulled wine, as well as lovely handmade trinkets – the most enjoyable way to find that perfect gift. As you meander along the market, make sure you schedule a stop at Southbank Centre and catch one of their festive shows, such as Rumpelstiltskin, the beloved family fairy tale reimagined with lashings of magical mayhem, rocking music and supreme silliness. Or else Circus 1903 might catch your eye: full of daredevil, turn-of-the-century circus shenanigans, complementing the magic of Christmas perfectly. Southbank Centre will also be hosting their opulent NYE Spectacular, suffused with glamour, elegance and ultimate musical immersion.

  • Watch a Theatrical Masterpiece

The National Theatre always delivers when it comes to top notch productions – a sure fire hit if you’re looking for a night out in London. We recommend Hadestown, which comes to the NT following record-breaking runs at New York Theatre Workshop and Canada’s Citadel Theatre. Another to catch if you can, is hit, War Horse, returning to the National Theatre to mark the centenary of Armistice Day eleven years after its debut at the theatre, and now celebrates playing in eleven countries to over seven million people. House restaurant, located inside the NT has a fantastic and well-priced menu, especially welcoming to vegetarians; whilst the Understudy craft beer pub on the ground floor is where many of the actors go for a pint post-performance – expect comfy chesterfields, board games and great ale.

  • Christmas Classics at The Old Vic

A Christmas Carol at The Old Vic – one of London’s oldest, and certainly best-loved theatres, combined with Charles Dickens’ immortal classic, is festive perfection. This version is joyously bought to the stage by Jack Thorne (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) filling the auditorium with mince pies, music and merriment, with a unique staging. Running alongside this is an exclusive storytelling with Michael Rosen on the morning of the 15th. He will be reading his illustrious retellings of two of Dickens classics: Bah! Humbug! and Unexpected Twist: An Oliver Twisted Tale.

We love Mark’s Bar (by Mark Hix), located at the Dress Circle and Upper Circle bars, for a post-performance drink (it’s also open until 2am Thursday to Saturday, making it the ideal place for late-night drinking in Waterloo).

  • Discover Truths and Treasures at the Imperial War Museum

The Imperial War Museum is one of London’s best -loved museums, telling the stories of people’s experiences of modern war from the First World War to conflicts today. In more recent years, the museum has begun to curate an increasingly art-led exhibition programme, the latest being Mimesis: African Soldier, part of the Making A New World season. The exhibition highlights how millions of Africans and people of colour from across the globe fought and took part in the First World War and seeks to commemorate them. Highly recommended too is the museum’s amazing permanent exhibitions, and we’ll let you into this little secret… the IWM giftshop is an absolute goldmine when it comes to finding presents – not only is their substantial book collection excellent, they also have beautiful aviator-style leather jackets, nice stationary and other trinkets.
