South Bank's Best Veggie Restaurants

May 3rd, 2018 | by Jennifer Edwards

South Bank's Best Veggie Restaurants

Being more conscious of what we're eating and where our food has come from has become more important to us as of late – and not too soon! Generally speaking, we are becoming more eco-conscious and more aware of how our lifestyle and choices impact the environment.

There has been a recent trend in part-time vegetarians and vegans - whilst not cutting it out completely, many of us are choosing to eat less meat, because we know it's not the most sustainable and oftentimes ethical of choices. Perhaps in response to this, restaurants have seriously upped their game, shunning the traditional and tired stuffed peppers and nut roasts for more vibrant veggie dishes that surprise and delight.

Enjoy the best veggie-friendly restaurants in South Bank with our curated guide.

  • Vegan Polenta Primavera

OXO Tower Restaurant are on a mission to change the way London thinks about veggies. With menus heralding the best seasonal produce available, their dedicated vegetarian menus in both the Restaurant and the Brasserie ensure herbivores get to indulge just as much as the rest of us. And to go one further, you might say that their veggie dishes are some of the most successful on the menu.

They're creative, fresh and so packed full of flavour that you'd be hard pushed to miss meat on your plate. We particularly rate the golden and crispy tarragon and whole grain mustard polenta primavera (pictured above). And pssst - we've even managed to get the recipe... Also good is the falafel, red pepper and feta salad with spiced pomegranate dressing.

Check out their veggie + vegan menus HERE.

  • Beetroot Risotto

The beautiful Sea Containers Restaurants at the London Mondrian is a creative clash of American and British cuisine, offering a modern yet casual dining experience alongside the River Thames. In the summer, the french windows that line the restaurant are flung open, and you can dine on the terrace to enjoy the riverside views and sunshine.

Sea Containers Restaurant champions seasonal, farm-to-table dining - with all of their dishes designed for sharing. From the field, their local produce is ethically and sustainably sourced wherever possible. We're digging their beetroot risotto, made with pickled beets, horseradish and hazelnuts (see above image) as well as their flatbreads with courgette, mint yoghurt and watercress.

  • House Restaurant at the National Theatre

If you didn't know that the National Theatre is also home to a decently priced, fine dining restaurant called House, then we are here to impart this piece of information upon you with great joy. It's a fantastic restaurant, benefiting from the quiet, bunker-like architecture of the brutalist building. In the summer, it's breathtaking balconies, with long grasses and benches, is the perfect place to sip an aperitif before your meal or indeed after a performance.

For National Vegetarian week, we propose three elegant dishes - Asparagus, vegan Hollandaise, Seitan, & vegan parmesan (see above), Goats cheese Brule, cucumber chutney, Stout & Seaweed bread or the Watercress speltoto, truffled Cornish brie, peeled grapes & pickled celery...

Don't take our word for it, Time Out have echoed our views, adding, 'A standing ovation for the National Theatre's new destination restaurant.'

  • Asparagus & Chanterelle Mushrooms

Skylon South Bank, located within the esteemed Royal Festival Hall, has a dedicated vegetarian menu, and it is pretty spectacular.

To start, choose from a delicate mushroom soup, perfumed with parsley oil, marinated artichokes with preserved lemon and watercress salad, a fresh Ceasar salad or baby plum tomatoes with truffle ricotta.

On to the second course and we propose to you a wild garlic risotto with French green asparagus, red pepper and goats cheese tortellini or French white asparagus with Chanterelle mushrooms. The presentation is enough to bring a tear to the eye of even the harshest MasterChef judge - (the head chef Kim Woodward has actually been on the professionals) - and the creative, vibrant menu is a feast for the palate as well as the eyes.

  • Best Veggie Burger

Fall down the rabbit hole at House of Vans London and get lost in the tunnels which are home to art installations, workshops and a free cinema, not to mention a huge live music space and skateboard/BMX park. One needs sustenance when exploring, which is where The Wall SE1 comes in, House of Vans' American style diner, complete with some of the best burgers around.

The Wall's veggie burger is made with roasted courgettes, cheddar cheese, caramelised red onion and burger sauce on a (brioche, of course) bun. Served with sweet potato wedges and a sweet chilli sauce/ garlic mayo - it hits the spot!

There's also a Mexican bean, sweet potato and quinoa hot pot served with brown rice for a super healthy option which is too tasty to feel like you've been good - as does the vegan-friendly special house salad with mixed leaf, beetroot, roast sweet potato, red onion, sunflower seeds & French vinaigrette dressing...

We also did their milkshakes and Dead Head Donuts- heaven!

  • Veggie Brunch Extravaganza

Florentine Restaurant at Park Plaza London Waterloo is an all-day dining restaurant and bar just minutes from the bustling South Bank and right opposite Lambeth North tube station. Florentine serves a Brasserie-style menu and a bar featuring the best of British bubbles and craft beers as well as a range of signature cocktails, with DJ sessions throughout the evenings and weekends for a refreshing, relaxed vibe.

It's renowned in London for the mother of all hangover cures - an ostrich egg omelette! As ravenous as you may be, however, we definitively recommend having a few friends in tow as its ahem, much larger than your usual omelette.

As well as the Ostrich Eggs, Florentine is a 24-hour brunch venue, and has a selection of great veggie options on offer. To start, there's a delicious wild mushroom soup with roasted almonds and rosemary - or the freshest burrata with sun-ripened tomatoes. Their salads are packed with deliciousness and texture, with zingy dressings - we like the roasted sweet potato and kale salad with cashew nuts, pumpkin seeds and chicory with a chive dressing. They also have a whole section dedicated to eggs - whether you like them poached, fried, scrambled - with spinach, avocado or smoked salmon (for the pescatarians) - they have it at Florentine.

  • Pan-Asian Veggie Cuisine

Now, how's this for an original vegetarian menu: Chino Latino at Park Plaza London Riverbank describes itself as a Modern Pan-Asian Cuisine & Latin Bar, and it has a dedicated veggie menu (as well as an entire gluten-free menu, too).

There's veggie sushi and sashimi salads to start - including vegetarian maki roll of the day and a chef's selection of Japanese handroll shiso with quinoa and truffle mayo, or Bahn trang rice paper rolls with pomelo, mango, green nam jim sauce for mains. Everything is deliciously fresh and zesty, so full of flavour.

The restaurant quite recently relocated to the top floor of Park Plaza Riverbank and comes with fabulous views and a great atmosphere - try it and let us know what you thought...
