Great South Bank Outdoors

January 18th, 2017 | by jennifer

Great South Bank Outdoors

Cast off your winter woollies, slip on your shades and get down to London’s South Bank to enjoy the great outdoors this summer! From fine dining al fresco to family-friendly picnic areas, here you’ll find the perfect spot to enjoy sunny days and balmy evenings in the City.

  • Marriott Hotel Pool

We can’t always rely on the English climate so we’ve included this one, even though, strictly speaking, it’s indoors. A dip in the 25m pool at the Marriott Hotel with its vast skylights and palm trees will give you that holiday feeling whatever the weather!

  • Gabriel’s Wharf/Queen’s Walk

The cafés and restaurants of Gabriel’s Wharf share an outdoor dining area, ideal for a summer snack, or you can relax on the lawns at Bernie Spain Gardens – right on the banks of the Thames. Sightseers should take a stroll along the Queen’s Walk, a leafy riverside promenade where photo opportunities abound.

  • The Queen Elizabeth Hall Roof Garden/Alchemy Festival

The Southbank Centre’s "secret" garden is a true oasis in the heart of London, complete with allotments and fruit trees, not to mention stunning views across the city. It’s the perfect place for refreshment before you head into the centre to enjoy the exciting and diverse programme of events on offer. Don’t miss the Alchemy Festival – a celebration of arts and culture from the UK and South Asia taking place over the May Bank Holiday.

  • Thames Clippers/ River Roamer

If you wilt at thought of a stuffy tube train, and London traffic jams get you down, why not take to the river with Thames Clippers? The River Roamer tickets offer unlimited travel for a whole day, so you can hop on and off at your leisure and enjoy the sights of London in the fresh air.

  • Mondrian London Terrace

The fabulously named Rumpus Room at Mondrian London pays homage to the Bright Young Things: the decadent set of Londoners who filled 1920s gossip columns. Indulge your inner bohemian with a cocktail in the sumptuous bar, before gliding out to the magnificent balcony to drink in the panoramic vista as the sun sets across the city.

  • Coca-Cola London Eye

The London Eye’s Cocktail Hour Experience is just the thing for after-work drinks, romantic liaisons or just a great night out. Enjoy expertly crafted cocktails in your capsule and look down on the bright lights of the city aboard the world’s largest cantilevered observation wheel.

  • The Green Room

Brought to you by the National Theatre, The Green Room is a neighbourhood bar and restaurant set in a lush garden, created and maintained by local volunteers. While away a summer evening sipping a G&T from a deckchair on the lawn, or find a picnic table and order yourself a bite to eat from the casual menu.

  • OXO Tower Rooftop Terrace

As if a harbinger of the coming warmer months, OXO Tower’s famous rooftop terrace is the perfect spot to soak up the gorgeous views of the city, as well as a bit of sun! Spring and summertime al fresco dining at this London landmark is an experience not to be missed. Just don’t forget to book in advance!

  • Skylon

Another one that’s not, technically speaking, outdoors, but Skylon’s floor-to-ceiling windows affording unobstructed views across the Thames mean that you might as well be. We recommend indulging in an aperitif at the famous central bar, right in the middle of the restaurant and covered in climbing plants and flowers, giving you the feeling of being in an English garden.

  • Riverfront at BFI Southbank

Nestled under Waterloo Bridge, opposite the second-hand book market, the Riverfront Café’s pavement tables feel distinctly Continental. Tuck into a gourmet burger from the restaurant or enjoy a cold beer from the café bar, safe in the knowledge that, if the English weather lets you down, outdoor heaters will keep you warm long into the evening.

  • Geraldine Mary Hemsworth Park at IWM London

For a family day out on a budget, look no further than IWM London (Imperial War Museum). Admission to the main galleries is free of charge, while the surrounding gardens are perfect for a picnic. The Geraldine Mary Hemsworth Park was opened in 1934 and gifted to the mothers of Southwark. Today it is a haven for frazzled 21st-century parents, who can relax on the grass while their kids let off steam. There’s even an outdoor café so you can treat them to an ice cream when they’re tired out.

  • South Bank Parks and Gardens

Despite its close proximity to the bustle of Lower Marsh Market, the lawns and wildflowers of Waterloo Millennium Green make it a peaceful picnic spot, perfect for tired office workers in need of fresh air and a screen break.

You’ll find the Jubilee Gardens situated underneath the London Eye. Opened in 1977 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee, the Gardens were redeveloped in 2012 and now boast a sustainable park, new flowerbeds, trees, granite pathways and a contemporary playground. They make an idyllic location to pause for a family picnic midway through a day out on the South Bank.
