Penny
at the old vic
Opening Times
Mon-Wed 8am-1am, Thu-Fri 8am-2am, Sat 10am-2am
Kitchen open: 8am-7.30pm
The Old Vic has undergone a bit of a transformation as of late, the most noticeable of which is it’s shiny new bar, Penny!
Inspiration for the name comes from The Penny Lectures: a series of talks hosted in the halls of The Old Vic in 1882, designed to encourage new thinking and ideas amongst the people of London. What was once The Pit Bar is now a stylish, relaxed all-day café and late night bar, serving local food, proper coffee and great wines.
Imagined by the people behind M1lk and Fields Café, Penny will serve creative and wholesome food and drink, using fresh, local produce with simplicity and provenance at the heart of the offering. Coffee connoisseurs can also rejoice, as speciality coffee from Workshop Coffee, Clerkenwell will be served alongside the all day menu.
Stylish and unpretentious, this is an ideal spot to grab a drink or a bite to eat pre/post performance – and because The Old Vic has always been a theatre that reaches out to other parts of the community, the theatre will be donating a penny for each item sold to a charity inspired by the themes of the show on the main stage at the time.

There are two Caffe Nero sites within Waterloo Station - ideally located next to exits so you can grab a great quality coffee on the go.
The extensive menu includes a wide range of beverages from a full-bodied espresso to a sumptuous Hot Chocolate Milano made with liquid chocolate.
When Gerry Ford founded Caffè Nero in 1997, his aim was to bring a premium, continental-style cafè to Great Britain. He wanted it to be authentically Italian, serving premium espresso-based coffee, fresh high quality food, and a neighbourhood gathering spot.
In 1997, Gerry bought five retail sites in London and began to create his vision. It took nearly one year to perfect the brand and build a strong team of equally passionate people. During these early years, Caffè Nero received the honour of "Best Espresso This Side of Milan". In 1999 we opened stores outside of London for the first time, and by the end of 2000, the Nero team had built 31 cafes and established the company as a national brand. We also won a British Design Council award for best company identity.

Opened in 1947, The Hole in The Wall is pretty much an institution in Waterloo - and it's stayed pretty much the same for years. A stone's throw from Waterloo Station, this little gem of a pub is actually quite a large hole in a wall, being situated situated in an arch beneath one of the main routes used by trains to enter Waterloo station. Every few minutes there is a train rumbling throughout the pub which gives the place an Old Time charm.
The food served at the Hole in the Wall does have a rather large selection of beers on tap. There are five ale hand pumps. They also do Leffe Blonde on tap, a great tasting lager. Other beers on tap include Hoegaarden and Becks Vier.
When you consider its proximity to the station and the excellent range of beers on the hand pumps, it is clear to see why the place has an appeal amongst commuters to and from South Bank and local employees .
Not a great place for a romantic tête-à-tête, but a handy one to put right the evils of another day in the office or kill time while waiting for that train.
